The Supreme Court of Hawaii has amended rule 6.1 of its Rules of Professional Conduct. Hawaii lawyers are now permitted to exercise a desire to perform pro bono legal services by donating at least $500 to the Hawaii Justice Foundation or another entity that provides legal services at no cost or significantly reduced cost to persons of limited means. The court also enacted rule 6.5, which addresses conflict of interest issues for lawyers providing brief advice at pro bono clinics sponsored by established organizations providing legal services to persons of limited means. Both enactments are effective January 1, 2012.
