Job Title: Ohio Justice Bus Staff Attorney 

Status: Full-Time, Exempt Position

What is the Ohio Justice Bus? 

The Ohio Justice Bus is a mobile legal office and technology hotspot that allows legal aid and pro bono attorneys to travel to and provide legal services to rural Ohioans and those who lack access at no cost to them. Position Description: 

The Ohio Justice Bus Staff Attorney leads the Ohio Justice Bus efforts to provide high quality civil legal services throughout the state. The Staff Attorney is part of a three-person team which includes the program coordinator and the director. The Staff Attorney engages with community partners, bar associations, legal aid, and courts; staffs clinics and events across the state; trains and supports volunteer attorneys; prepares documents for clinics; and provides legal assistance to Ohioans with limited access or financial means. The Staff Attorney is responsible for the successful operation of clinics and events around the state. The Staff Attorney will also share responsibility for driving the Bus, a 24’ Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van to and from the clinics. 

The ideal candidate is skilled at working independently and as part of a team; demonstrates professionalism, initiative, and attention to detail; has a strong work ethic; and possesses outstanding written and verbal communication skills. The position reports to the Ohio Justice Bus Director. 

The starting salary for this position is $70,000, including a generous benefits package, and is negotiable commensurate with experience. 

Job Duties: 

  • Help maintain relationships with community partners, legal aid, bar associations, and courts; 
  • Sustain relationships with attorney volunteers through training, mentorship, and support; 
  • Ensure clinics are appropriately set up and operational;  
  • Serve clients, particularly if volunteer attorneys are absent or clinic need exceeds scheduled attorney capacity; 
  • Regularly review processes and suggest program improvements as needed; 
  • Help maintain Ohio Justice Bus data; 
  • Assist in reviewing grant applications and reports; and 
  • Manage a small caseload of cases for full representation. 

General Support Duties: 

  • Maintain communication channels with volunteers and potential clients (e.g. email and social media); 
  • Help create promotional materials; 
  • Maintain, update, and create forms as needed;  
  • Drive and maintain the Ohio Justice Bus, including ensuring that the vehicle is fully equipped with necessary supplies before each outing; and 
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Ohio Justice Bus Director. 

Qualifications: 

  • Licensed to practice law in Ohio (J.D.) 
  • At least 2 years of experience preferred. 
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. 

Preferred Experience: 

  • Experience in family law, wills, record sealing, and/or consumer law. 
  • Experience working with low-income and vulnerable populations; 
  • Experience with Salesforce and case management systems; and 
  • Sensitivity and cultural competency.
