A new housing development in Greene County will give low and moderate-income seniors access to safe, affordable housing. The Cascades, a senior-focused housing project, is being developed by Yellow Springs Home, Inc., a community land trust.

Thanks to the Foundation’s Neighborhood Stabilization Grant Program, funded through Attorney Unclaimed Funds, Advocates for Basic Legal Equality (ABLE) provided critical legal services to Yellow Springs Home, Inc., which ensured the project reached the finish line after nearly 10 years of effort by multiple community groups.

At a Phase 1 ribbon-cutting ceremony at the end of July, ABLE attorney Mike Loudenslager was honored with Yellow Springs Home, Inc.’s “Manna from Heaven” Award for his outstanding legal advocacy and support of the project.

“Mike’s work underscores the value of civil legal services in developing affordable housing,” said Angie Lloyd, executive director of the Foundation. “His expertise was invaluable to the groups that have worked so diligently to bring the project to fruition.”

Residents at the Cascades will benefit from a variety of accessibility features and amenities, supportive service partnerships, and shared outdoor green spaces. Best of all, the innovative community land trust model ensures that the Cascades will remain affordable for senior residents for decades to come.

“Because of the Foundation’s partnership with the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Unclaimed Funds, we were able to continue funding our award-winning Neighborhood Stabilization Grant Program,” said Lloyd. “The Cascades is a perfect example of how investing in legal services can remove barriers and create lasting economic impact for Ohio communities.”

The Ohio Access to Justice Foundation is the largest funder of civil legal services in Ohio. A gift to the Foundation supports Ohio’s legal aids.
