The Ohio Access to Justice Foundation, the largest funder of civil legal services in Ohio, has announced funding awards for 19 nonprofit legal service providers totaling $2.79 million. The Foundation is granting more than $1.64 million to nonprofits to shore up funding diminished by the pandemic and to support new special projects to address the growing civil legal need around Ohio.

“These nonprofits provide life-changing civil legal services to improve the health, safety, and stability of low-income Ohioans,” said Angie Lloyd, the Foundation’s executive director. “We are thrilled to support their critical work.”

An additional $1.15 million in grant awards will address the immigration legal needs of our newest Ohioans, Afghan evacuees seeking safety and security in their new home. Thanks to a generous grant from the State of Ohio and in partnership with the Ohio State Bar Association, the Foundation is distributing funds to expand the capacity of Ohio civil legal aids and specialty legal service providers to serve Afghans, including establishing and supporting a statewide pro bono program.

“It’s an honor to be able to give back to these Afghan heroes who helped our military when they served in Afghanistan,” Lloyd said. “This funding allows our grantees to offer services to stabilize the Afghans arriving in Ohio, many of whom have complex legal needs.”
