Kermit Lowery, Vice President and Assistant General Counsel for the LexisNexis U.S. Legal Department has been named a 2014 American Bar Association Pro Bono Publico Award winner. The award was presented to Lowery during the recently-concluded American Bar Association Annual Meeting in Boston.

Lowery developed a passion for pro bono work during his service in the US Army JAG, where he provided legal information and advice to service members but was unable to represent them in court.

When he left active military duty, Lowery relocated to Dayton and discovered the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project (GDVLP). He gained confidence to volunteer for and accept domestic relations cases after attending a GDVLP domestic relations training. After the training, he accepted his first pro bono case and “I’ve continued ever since,” he said in a written award recipient statement. Lowery now handles 10 to 20 pro bono cases a year.

“I’m extremely passionate and dedicated to providing DR pro bono services because for many individuals it is truly a new start in life,” he continued in his written statement. Lowery also recognized GDVLP board members and attorneys in the Dayton area who volunteer for GDVLP: “the VLP board members (past and present) are extremely supportive, engaged and are doing great things for VLP as well as their firms, offices and other organizations in the Dayton area.”
