The Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation is launching the “Voices for Justice” Campaign in central Ohio to raise awareness of the valuable work that civil legal aid provides to Ohio’s in-need communities.
In announcing the campaign, Ms. Lloyd, the director of the Foundation, said “Many people do not know what Ohio legal aid lawyers do for the people they serve or that Ohio’s legal aids are nonprofit organizations that rely on donations and grants to fund much of the good work that they do. We are initiating the Voices Campaign to show Ohioans that they can make a difference.”
Legal aid regularly represents children struggling in school to secure supports to ensure their academic success. Legal aid also represents Ohio’s low-income veterans in all the matters that impact their lives from housing to securing financial stability. Legal aid represents victims of domestic violence in their efforts to obtain protection orders and maintain themselves and their children in their family home. Finally, legal aid represents Ohio’s seniors as they struggle to maintain their dignity and financial independence.
While central Ohio is served by the Legal Aid Society of Columbus and Southeastern Ohio Legal Services, there are nine legal aid organizations in total throughout the state: Advocates for Basic Legal Equality and Legal Aid of Western Ohio serving northwest Ohio; Community Legal Aid, serving the Akron, Canton, Youngstown area; The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland serving Cuyahoga and the northeastern lake counties; The Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati and Legal Aid of Southwestern Ohio serving southwestern Ohio; and, Pro Seniors, a statewide organization serving Ohio’s senior citizens.
Ms. Lloyd encourages all Ohioans to learn more about legal aid and to support the cause. “Legal aid is a charity that we should all love. It improves lives and strengthens our communities by ensuring that even our most vulnerable Ohio families can live safely and securely. Legal aid helps to ensure justice for all by giving a legal voice to those who would otherwise go unheard.”
